Illustration Friday Wrinkles

This illustration was inspired by Hemingways noella- The Old Man and the Sea, the story of a battle between an old fisherman (Santiago) and a giant marlin. I chose to create the image as a woodcut partly because I thought the media would best reflect Hemingways raw writing style, and partly because I love working in print. I wanted my character to represent the worn, determined and slightly tragic figure of the fisherman preparing to set sail. For inspiration I studied the etchings of Gustav Dore, some of Peter Howsons prints and the graphics of the German expressionists.

I like how you can still sort of see a youth about him in his eyes. The waves are very nice. Laura xx

This is one of my favourite pieces of your work. The abstract elements creating the forms of his face are great, creating the impression of a weathered, old face without following the paths of standard wrinkles. The waves work less well, mainly because each one is rendered so differently from all the others. This also leads to the leftmost wave at the back resembling a snow-capped mountain.

Everything about this works the way you intended it to and it's a wonderful piece of work. Congratulations.
